Weekend Of 11/15/08 Update

November 16, 2008 – 1:02 pm

This will just be a short blog posting. We didn’t really do anything around Dad’s house. When we got there Uncle George wanted to spackle up Dad’s celing (pictures later).

We instead concentrated our efforts on Marie Avenue where my Mom lives. Her place needs a lot of work to pass inspection. We basically went to Home Depot to purchase a lot of stuff to start fixing up that house. We decided to start on the basement. I won’t really post too much about this, but the list is rather long of the things they need. Possibly more updates later!

Weekend Of 11/1/08 Update

November 16, 2008 – 1:00 pm

Since we had Halloween parties to go to, we didn’t get to accomplish all that much. What we did do was impressive, though. The dumpster was taken away, first thing.

Progress on Dumpster IV:

Date Started: Oct 11, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 weeks
Actual Time: 3 weeks
Players Involved: Uncle George, me, Brian, Stacy, Crow, George, Mom
Status Of This Project: Completed (might be our last dumpster!)

Uncle George wasn’t there that weekend so it was just Brian, Stacy, Mom, and I. Brian and I decided to take down the security system (NOT BRINKS) that Dad had. It was an all day job tracing all those cords around the house. It was impressive what Dad had set up.

We went outside and took down all the cords where the one camera had been. Also, we took down the one in Dad’s room. We then took down the one in the garage. Only one camera remains.

Progress on camera removals:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 days
Actual Time: 3 days
Players Involved: Me, Brian, Seth
Status Of This Project: In Progress (5/6 down, one in kitchen remains)

Stacy and Mom worked on taping up more of the house.

When the day was done, Brian and I had a lot of cords and a lot of expensive camera equipment. You know, Dad had wired it through his safe and had its own power supply just in case someone turned off the electricity. It was a pretty extravagent system.

For the next weekend we wouldn’t be around. We were going to see Brian’s uncle in South Carolina.

Weekend Of 10/25/08 Update

October 29, 2008 – 9:22 pm

We set out to do what’s on the Big List but the things we really wanted to do was rip down the lamp posts, break up the concrete, and finish demolishing the club house. Since it was rainy, we coudn’t do much. Uncle George was there though.

Uncle George and Bri started out by cleaning out the rest of the shed, bleeching it, and getting it ready to go. Stacy and I spackled the house and taped up more.

During the week, Uncle George got his flea market buddy to get most of the stuff out of the pool room. It’s almost empty!

Shed:

Date Started: Aug 9, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 days
Actual Time: 3 months
Players Involved: Brian, Uncle George, Curtis
Status Of This Project: In Progress (needs to be taken to the rental property)

We decided to start seriously cleaning the garage. We worked on the back, where the shelves are.

We’re not sure what we’re doing this next weekend. The dumpster should be taken away early Saturday.

Date Started: Oct 11, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 weeks
Actual Time: 3 weeks
Players Involved: Uncle George, me, Brian, Stacy, Crow, George, Mom, Robbie
Status Of This Project: Completed

Weekend Of 10/18/08 Update

October 23, 2008 – 7:16 pm

Bri and I wrote down a huge list of stuff we would have liked to get done. Turns out, our jobs were more time consuming than once thought. Here’s the list:

  • Knock down club house
  • Knock down lamp posts
  • Take down dead pine tree
  • Clean roof over front porch
  • Paint front porch posts
  • Kitchen floor (all day + job)
  • Tape up house
  • 2nd coat of spackle
  • Fix gutters
  • Clean gutters
  • Take Dorsey off of Craigslist
  • Clean front porch

Turns out, the front porch had metal around the posts so we baught paint for nothing. Uncle George had also taken down the dead pine tree. I took Dorsey (the incomplete house) off of Craigslist.

Stacy was awesome and had a few of her friends come over to help. I started the day out by touching up the deck. Brian begain cleaning the roof of the porch.

Date Started: Oct 18, 2008
Estimated Time: 4 hours
Actual Time: 6 hours
Players Involved: Brian, Robbie, Steve
Status Of This Project: Completed

Stacy had some of her friends come over to help out. Robbie was also there. Steve and Robbie mostly worked on dismantling more of the club house. Pretty impressive. I got Stacy and Megan to help me cleaning the front porch. There was a dead bird on the porch that we needed to dispose of first, though. Sad.

Date Started: Oct 18, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 hours
Actual Time: 6 hours
Players Involved: Megan, Stacy, Me
Status Of This Project: Completed

I was also feeling motivational and cleaned the two windows to the little garage.

Robbie and Brian also walked around the entire house and cleaned out all the gutters. Bri also did the garage gutters. Very important now that fall is here.

Brian also cleaned off the shed so it’s ready to go.

We got a lot done that day. This Saturday might be raining so we might tape up and spackle and do indoor stuff. If it turns out to be nice, we’ll try to start taking down the lamp posts, break up the concrete, and continue demolishing the club house.

Weekend Of 10/11/08 Update

October 13, 2008 – 10:17 am

The two major things we set out to do were finish staining the deck and the roof.

Uncle George, George, and a guy named Crow were there ass early in the morning ripping off Dad’s roof. As it turns out, none of the water seeped into the wood and stayed there so the sky light was able to be saved.

Progress on Dad’s roof:

Date Started: Oct 11, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 Days
Actual Time: 1 Day
Players Involved: Uncle George, Robbie, Crow, George
Status Of This Project: Completed (we saved the skylight!)

Stacy, Brian, and I also finished staining the deck while the guys worked on the roof. Mom also came and emptied the trash cans in the dumpster we got.

Progress on Dumpster IV:

Date Started: Oct 11, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Uncle George, me, Brian, Stacy, Crow, George, Mom
Status Of This Project: In Progress (need to clean out more stuff & finish taking down club house)

Progress on the deck:

Date Started: Aug 30, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 weeks
Actual Time: around 6 weeks
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me, Curtis, Crow, Uncle George
Status Of This Project: Completed (light touch ups might be needed)

Robbie and crow also started to dismantle the club house. We got pretty far. Youtube videos to come!

Clubhouse dismantle:

Date Started: Oct 11, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Uncle George, George, Dave, Robbie, Crow
Status Of This Project: In Progress (took down about 1/4 so far)

Weekend Of 10/04/08 Update

October 7, 2008 – 8:57 am

We came into this weekend with the following goals:

  • finish going through the inside bins
  • paint or stain deck
  • get into Dad’s safety deposit box
  • take pictures of the incomplete house
  • clean up the garage a bit

This particular weekend it was just Uncle George, Brian, and I. Bri and I first thing tried to find Dad’s safety deposit box so we went to the bank across the street. They said we had to be listed on the safety deposit box and there was nothing they could do. They actually did verify that Dad did not have a safety deposit box there. It’s up to the lawyer to sort it all out now.

We took pictures of the incomplete house in Annapolis. I will be putting it up on Craigslist.

When we got back to the house, Uncle George was playing around with the Corvette. Then they went to Home Depot to get the deck stain. They did that all day.

Since we couldn’t find the paint brushes we originally saw someplace, I couldn’t help them stain. I decided to go through the rest of the bins inside.

I also started to tape around the wood trim and things so we can paint.

We did get a lot done this weekend.

Progress on deck:

Date Started: Aug 30, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me, Curtis, Uncle George
Status Of This Project: In Progress (we’re in the process of staining it, 10 gallons wasn’t enough!)

Apparently I didn’t close out an action item!

Progress on ditching the old boats:

Date Started: Aug 16, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 weeks
Actual Time: 2 months
Players Involved: Brian, Uncle George, me, Stacy, Patrick, James
Status Of This Project: Completed (Uncle George got rid of the other boat so everything is gone!)

This next weekend, Uncle George and the other George should be doing Dad’s roof. Brian and I will finish staining the deck.

Weekend Of 9/27/08 Update

October 7, 2008 – 8:46 am

Since we’re only working Saturday, we don’t get as much done. This weekend it was raining so it limited our options. It was also Uncle George’s birthday.

I decided to take the initiative and start cleaning out the garage.

Stacy, Brian, Uncle George, Robbie, and I worked through it. Dave also came up to get the final car!

Progress on junk yard:

Date Started: Mar 2008
Estimated Time: 6-12 months
Actual Time: 6 months
Players Involved: Brian, Curtis, me, Uncle George, people who have cars up here, neighborhood kids
Status Of This Project: Completed

After Uncle George, Stacy, and Robbie left, Bri and I did some work inside. I went through some of the boxes that we had from Dad’s room.

Weekend Of 9/20/08 Update

September 25, 2008 – 9:31 pm

Since Bri Bri and I went on vacation, my sister and others did stuff around the house.

From what I understand they:

  • finished cleaning the deck
  • finished going through the records
  • spackled the house
  • got rid of all but one vehicle that was left in the junk yard
  • got Stacy’s Corvette running
  • cleaned the bathrooms again
  • separated the Coke stuff from the flea market stuff

We used bleach and laundry detergent to clean the deck.

We had Seth over for Saturday. Robbie also helped out. Uncle George’s project was taking the trailer apart. You know, the old boat we destroyed, that trailer. Uncle George also did some landscaping to open the area up some.

Brian met with the neighbor who wanted to see the incomplete house. After Uncle George left and Bri got back, Brian, Seth, Robbie, and I tried (and eventually succeeded) in getting the tires off of the trailer.

Stacy and I did a final walk through in the pool room. We also moved all the stuff but the tools down. Everything is basically ready to go in the pool room.

We also removed the rest of the mirrors in Dad’s bathroom. That’s ready for spackling.

We ran out of ideas so Brian and Seth took down a camera while I cleaned up the mudd stuff on the porch.

Progress on camera removals:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 days
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Me, Brian, Seth
Status Of This Project: In Progress (3/6 down, some wires still remain places, holes to clean up)

We will be painting the deck next weekend. We’ll find other stuff to do, I’m sure.

Progress on deck:

Date Started: Aug 30, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me, Curtis
Status Of This Project: In Progress (just paint it!)

Weekend Of 8/30/08 Update

September 1, 2008 – 9:18 pm

We didn’t have much time to do a lot on Saturday. We had my mom, Stacy, Curtis, Brian, and Paul there. We cleaned off the deck to get ready to clean it. We tried to get as much out of the cracks as we could. We also removed all the cameras and motion sensors that Dad had put on it.

Progress on camera removals:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 days
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Me
Status Of This Project: In Progress (2/6 down)

I will be putting stuff about the deck in its own post once we are done cleaning it completely.

We also took down Stacy’s mirror on Saturday. Curtis, Paul, and I also took down the T V that was still in the train room. Paul got Dad’s big T V out.

On Sunday, Brian, Curtis, Stacy, and I worked on cleaning the deck. It looks really good so far but it’s not finished yet. I worked hard getting all the crap out of the cracks.

Progress on deck:

Date Started: Aug 30, 2008
Estimated Time: 6 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me, Curtis
Status Of This Project: In Progress (we’re still cleaning it, looks much better, need to finish that & stain & paint it)

Since Brian and I will be gone on vacation for two whole weeks, I will not be updating this blog.

I will be thinking of stuff for my sister to accomplish while I’m gone. Things I can think of off the bat:

  • finish the record albums she’s going through
  • go through the adjacent cabinets right outside the kitchen that I missed
  • help Uncle George with whatever he’s doing
  • help Curtis finish the deck
  • go through the pool room again, make sure we didn’t miss anything important

Also note that when I get back, we will be only working on Saturday’s since Sunday is football time!

Weekend Of 8/23/08 Update

August 25, 2008 – 10:31 am

Brian and I decided to get a later start on Dad’s house and slept in. That was a good break.

Stacy, Brian, and I just worked on the inside all day on Saturday. The first thing we decided to do was go through all the stuff we’ve been collecting on the porch of the pool room. We’re currently keeping all the tools we find there. We threw away a lot of stuff and put more stuff in the big pile for the flea market.

Brian and I also decided to finally go through Dad’s laundry room. That little room has been untouched since Dad passed away, basically. We threw away a lot of stuff and cleaned it out.

Brian went through the pool room better separating the Coke stuff of which we want to keep for now from the rest of the flea market stuff.

I went through many boxes downstairs and tried to figure out cords.

Sunday we got a lot done since Uncle George was there with us. We had the plan to get all the cars down from the lifts.

We cleaned under Dad’s old truck first. We had previously cleaned under there in the Weekend Of 7/27/08 Update post. We had to get everything out this time to lower down the truck. We also had to move the Barracuda. We moved it to where the extra truck bed was. We decided to move that outside. After the big clean and moving the stuff we lowered down the truck. It was tricky since the truck wasn’t all the way up on the lift. After that, we decided to get the Sting Ray down. We had to move the blue Camero first since that was underneath the two lifts.

After that was done we lowered the Sting Ray down. The Sting Ray is the car of which a raccoon got into and tore up the interior. We swept around there and decided to ditch three engines we found for scrap. We lowered down the red Camero next. That was a chore since a lot of signs and stuff were underneath and had to be moved.

Now the garage is much cleaner. All the cars are off the lifts, never to be lifted up again. It’s a good thing because the lifts were not mounted in, so they could become unsterdy.

Uncle George is going to have Dad’s old truck so that will be out of here soon. The ram will be parked across the blue Camero’s way (on the lift of where the truck was) and in the way of the Barracuda.

Lowering the cars down:

Date Started: Aug 24, 2008
Estimated Time: 1 day
Actual Time: 5 hours
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me, Uncle George
Status Of This Project: Completed (cars are down, truck bed and truck are out)

Brian had to run to his parents to pick up our cooler for Uncle George. Uncle George went to his house to get his car trailer to try to get Dad’s truck. I decided to stay and get stuff done around the house. We had several more boxes to go through of paperwork. I did that and went through a bunch of other stuff.

Progress on Dumpster III:

Date Started: August 16, 2008
Estimated Time: 4 days
Actual Time: 2 weeks
Players Involved: Uncle George, me, Brian, Stacy, Nick
Status Of This Project: Completed (Brian just needs to call them to pick it up)

Uncle George is also working on cleaning out the shed:

Date Started: Aug 9, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 days
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Brian, Uncle George, Curtis
Status Of This Project: In Progress (Uncle George is working to clean it out, the damage isn’t that bad so we will take it to the rental property for them to use)

Also, the junk yard is almost done. We only have four more cars left to get out!

Stuff we completed this weekend:

  • cleaned laundry room completely, no more laundry will be done
  • went through most of down stairs
  • went through all of deck of pool room
  • moved stuff around in the house
  • went through some records
  • moved all the cars down from off the lifts
  • Uncle George will be taking Dad’s old truck
  • cleaned a significant portion of the garage, ditched some engines

Next weekend it will be Stacy, Brian, Curtis, and I working around the house. My goals are:

  • get the T V off the stand in train room (Bri and I couldn’t do this by ourselves over this weekend)
  • put the tanning bed on Craigslist
  • spackle the rooms
