Sell Dad’s Boat

August 10, 2008 – 10:41 pm

As most of you know, we’ve had a hell of a time trying to unload Dad’s boat! It’s a really really nice boat but no one seemed to want it.

We called up a boat broker in May when the summer months were around. He took pictures and posted it on their website but no real interest. They said that it would take about a month to get interest then we could move the boat to their place so people can actively look at it. Well, they only generated two buyers that we know of with interest. None came to see the boat.

I got very frusterated and started listing it on Craigslist starting at $100,000 and going down.

After three to four weeks of relisting and relisting, we finally got some serious people. I got a lot of responses, none of what I was looking for in price but since it was then August, yeah, it was about time I got rid of it. I took it for a lot lower than what it’s worth but I think the guy will treat it right.

Dad loved his boat. In the end, since it wasn’t driven in so long, the gas had gone bad. It needed $3,000 worth of repairs but she should be back and able to sail again!

No boat in the garage, where will we put stuff now?

Progress on boat sale:

Actual Time: 3 months

Weekend Of 8/02/08 Update

August 4, 2008 – 9:53 pm

We didn’t get much done this weekend.

On Saturday we had a little crisis with a guy who wanted to come down from New York to look at the boat. Turns out I had forgotten about Uncle George’s previous engagement, so he wasn’t available to take the boat out. Luckally (I guess) it was supposed to be real bad thunderstorms later that day.

Uncle George and Brian hooked the boat up to the Ram to pull it out to give it a good wash.

Boat seeing the light of day

Dave came by to get Mom’s old Camero. That’s gone now, officially. All the cars are ours.

Progress on junk yard:

Date Started: Mar 2008
Estimated Time: 6-12 months
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Brian, Curtis, me, Uncle George, people who have cars up here, neighborhood kids
Status Of This Project: In Progress (almost complete, only 7 cars left!)

Also Saturday I spent a good part of the day cleaning Dad’s bathroom. It’s bleechy clean now. Brian went over to the rental property to see what was the matter with the gutters. Stacy also got a lot accomplished on her room.

Sunday was pretty hectic. Uncle George found a guy who wanted to buy the old Ford Mach 1 Mustang. We dug that out. Very luckally, it was in pretty decent shape (as compared to the other Camero’s we dug out of there).

1970 Ford Mach 1 Mustang

The guy took that and will tell us if he wants the small block engine we have for a Ford in the garage.

Ryan also came over that day to help with the boat. We got her started but she kept studdering and stalling and the engines weren’t working properly.

Unfortunately we couldn’t get the engines to work correctly for the guy coming down from New York. He showed up around 2 PM. Uncle George and Ryan worked on it for a long time trying to get it to run.

After hours of testing, they gave up because they were out of ideas. We think it’s a minor problem. We’re going to take it to the boat dealer over the week but, the guy still wants the boat. He already has a contract and deposit ready for it. It’s amazing.

So over the week, hopefully, the Sonic dealer can get the boat fixed and he can take it away hopefully Friday or Saturday.

Progress on boat sale:

Date Started: May 2008
Estimated Time: 5 months
Actual Time: 3 months
Players Involved: Brian, me, lawyer, Sonic Dealership, Uncle George, Ryan
Status Of This Project: Near Complete (just need to fix it and the guy will pick it up!)

Not sure what the agenda is next weekend but we’ll figure out something, we always do. Brian and his Dad will go over to the rental to fix the roof.

Fun stuff that happened this weekend was that my sister, Brian, and I fired a gun for the very first time! What fun stuff we get to do.

This week I got the boat numbers off of the boat that can be salvaged (at least we think). I’m going to give them to the lawyer to get a certificate of abandonment.

Weekend Of 7/27/08 Update

July 28, 2008 – 9:33 pm

We didn’t get much done this weekend. Uncle George got a lot done with the bob cat. We called about dirt we need. Uncle George said his company could get us the dirt we need.

All that we accomplished this weekend was cleaning out under the truck in the garage. This stuff was originally found on the green farm truck. It was a bunch of stuff of Mom’s that she never got.

Progress on junk under truck:

Date Started: July 26, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 hours
Actual Time: 3 hours
Players Involved: Brian, Stacy, me
Status Of This Project: Completed (we got some stuff together for the flea market guy, got Mom’s stuff together)

We also removed some more nails and stuff from the walls. We’re trying to devise a game plan of what to do next.

Sunday we went to a car show to show off the 69 Pace Car!

1969 Chevy Camero Pace Car

I think Stacy needs to get her room together so we can start inviting people over to paint and spakle.

The apraisers came over and apraised the house. They told Stacy a few things. The garage has mold in it that needs to be taken care of. Dad’s sky light is also leaking again.

We also need to concentrate on fixing the rental property, which seems to be nothing but a headache.

Here’s our like official list of what the house needs:

  • fix electrical
  • patch & paint walls
  • redo/clean floors
  • empty house (nearly done)
  • take out the camera’s
  • mold in the garage
  • door frame of Dad’s room needs to be done
  • replace or clean face plates
  • kitchen tile
  • fix Dad’s roof
  • check appliances (we know the microwave doesn’t work)
  • check/clean well water
  • check air conditioning
  • get the flea market stuff out
  • clean vents

On the outside:

  • take down or fix driveway lights
  • empty garage
  • take down club house
  • plant grass & landscape
  • dirt for hill
  • fix gutters
  • dispense of all used cars (will be done by the end of next week!)
  • storage for cars (not high, one of the very very last things)
  • power wash/paint deck
  • clean and ditch shed (shed will be going to the rental house)

Interesting side projects include:

  • selling the incomplete house (once we get the appraisel back, we’ll have a starting off point)
  • selling the boat (we have a few prospective buyers!)
  • deal with the rental house & their problems (sigh)

Weekend Of 7/20/08 Update

July 21, 2008 – 9:27 pm

I was sick off my ass Thursday through Saturday. Later on Saturday I finally started to get back to normal. By Sunday I was alright but still took it easy. We honestly didn’t get much done, but the stuff we did makes it look like we did… if that makes sense.

Saturday we got the dumpster, so we loaded that up! Tricia and Travis came over to help.

Dumpster number II getting filled

Progress on Dumpster II:

Date Started: July 19, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 hours
Actual Time: 3 hours
Players Involved: Uncle George, me, Brian, Stacy, Tricia, Travis, Nick
Status Of This Project: Completed (still putting random stuff in there of course)

Saturday we also cleaned up the garage. Some people also came over to look at the boat. We actually had to show up earlier to make sure the boat was tidy. No one bought it though. It’s still on Craigslist and I’ll keep listing it there.

Cleaner garage

Sunday came around, we didn’t get a lot done because it was hot. Brian and I stopped at his uncle’s house to get his bobcat. Uncle George used it to move some loose dirt around. So now we have a tractor and bobcat!

Happy equipment cooperating in peace

Progress on dirt/yard filling:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 4 weeks
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Uncle George, Brian

Stacy officially finished all the paperwork! Quite an accomplishment I’ll tell you!

Sunday Robbie and I cleaned out the closet downstairs finally.

Progress on closet downstairs:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 4 hours
Actual Time: 3 hours
Players Involved: Robbie, me
Status Of This Project: Completed (even removed the camera)

Speaking of the cameras, there are six cameras, now five.

After no camera

There is of course a motion detector for the security system. That stays of course.

Progress on camera removals:

Date Started: July 20, 2008
Estimated Time: 3 days
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Me
Status Of This Project: In Progress (1/6 down)

The rest of Sunday we took all the nails out of the walls and took a lot of stuff down from the kitchen and living room areas. The rest of the house (besides Stacy’s room) is bare with no nails or anything. All walls are ready to spackle and paint!

Weekend Of 7/13/08 Update

July 13, 2008 – 10:46 pm

We set out to do specific tasks but as usual but we ended up doing other stuff. Our to do list was:

  • clean decks, power wash, investigate what is needed
  • downstairs coat closet
  • clean Dad’s bathroom (bleach!)
  • finish cleaning out the 3 bedrooms upstairs
  • go through paperwork
  • go through kitchen
  • figure out what rental house needs
  • brick work
  • clean up more outside

Saturday the big thing was visiting the other rental property to get pictures and see what they need. Turns out they need and WANT a lot. We got a list together for ourselves of stuff to fix/get. Brian, Uncle George, and I went over around 1 and figured all that out. We also stopped by to see Dad’s grave since it’s right across the way. The cemetary hasn’t put his grave plate thing we got him yet. Boo!

Anyway, Sunday I went through paperwork and went through the kitchen. I put basically all the metal into the car that was going for scrap. We didn’t want any of the pots or pans or anything.

The brick layers came Saturday. They worked all that day and got it all done!

Garage window before

Garage window after

The guys we got to do this were really good! I wasn’t expecting such a fine job and so quick and cheap!

Date Started: July 12, 2008
Estimated Time: 2 days
Actual Time: 1 day
Players Involved: Uncle George, brick layers
Status Of This Project: Completed

The house is really coming along great. The outside looks excellent. Uncle George worked outside basically all weekend cleaning up. The yard looks so different!

One could swear it\'s not the same yard

Stacy worked more on her bedroom. That’s coming along very well, too.

We left Saturday earlier than usual (around 4:00) because we had dinner plans with friends. But I feel that was a productive day.

On Sunday we honestly didn’t do all that much. Brian and his Dad finished what they started the day before and moved all the loose stuff from the three bedrooms down to the pool room for further sorting. We have quite a collection for the flea market guy.

Dad’s closet and room are completely empty:

Date Started: Feb 2008
Estimated Time: 1-2 months
Actual Time: 5 months on & off
Players Involved: Me, Brian, Stacy
Status Of This Project: Completed (just need to paint and what not)

Progress on entire upstairs:

Date Started: Feb 2008
Estimated Time: 9 months
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Me, Brian, Curtis, Stacy, everyone else who helped with trains and what not
Status Of This Project: In Progress (almost done, just need Stacy to finish cleaning out her room, then it’s time to paint & clean & spackle!)

Julie Anne\'s room now

Progress on fixing the house:

Date Started: Feb 2008
Estimated Time: 1-2 years
Actual Time: TBD
Players Involved: Me, Uncle George, Curtis, Brian, Stacy
Status Of This Project: In progress (we do little things here & there, we need to clean & paint & stuff)

Sunday I also cleaned up the counter and the table. They were a mess, as usual. It’s so coming along, though. We’re going to order a dumpster next weekend so we’ll need help loading stuff into it (hint, hint).

We also moved one of the old boats out and we have a plan for it come a week! Wohoo!

Alright, so we missed a little bit of brick work, no biggie, we’ll do that later. Here’s a pretty list of stuff we still need to do with the house:

  • knock down clubhouse
  • Dad’s roof
  • power wash decks
  • dirt & bobcat to finish the yard
  • get people’s cars and boats out
  • make the landscape look nice & plant grass & stuff
  • clean & bleach & paint house
  • the garage (I’ll leave this as a big one since this will take several months)

I am worried about the boat not selling. We need to get rid of this thing!
